Zero Landfill
Published by Megan September 27th, 2007 in Creativity boost, EventsThursday, September 27, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. is the final Match Day for 2007. There are new materials coming in from architectural and interior design firms. You are invited to collect materials such as empty binders, upholstery samples, wallcovering, ceramic tile, carpet, and brick samples. Business Interiors and Environments is hosting the event in the parking lot behind their building at 2003 St. Clair Avenue, and the rain date is Friday, September 28th!
ZeroLandfill Celebration, a community wide material reclamation project, now in its second year, returned to downtown Cleveland this summer through October 5, 2007. Designed to divert from local landfills specification waste generated by architecture and interior design firms, ZeroLandfill is an effort to collect and redirect expired evaluation samples ranging from carpeting, upholstery and wall covering, to brick, tile and three ring binders. Local manufacturers, schools, artists, and other sources are encouraged to participate by receiving the diverted goods collected by the ZeroLandfill project team and re-using the materials as feedstock for production processes, works of art, product design, and educational
materials.
This is an exciting grassroots effort connecting the arts and education communities to the sustainable community in a way that is mutually beneficial. Materials collected are free, and many students are benefiting from enhanced resources to the classroom. The specification samples are not only diverted from landfill, but continue on to have a new life. Christy Gray of the RED DOT Project, is collecting images of the artwork and art projects created from materials collected. Please email images to her at christy@reddotproject.org throughout the year.
That was so fun!!! I found enough matching tile to re-do our bathroom floor and more tile to do the kitchen counter and backsplash! I also picked up a bunch of carpet tiles and swatches not knowing what I could do with them and ended up piecing them together to create a huge area rug. Also among our findings were books of wallpaper and fabric samples. That will keep us busy. We’re just sorry we didn’t make it to the celebration party after the event. What a great grassroots organization!
This is a great idea. Will there be one this year?
