Sock knitting workshops
Beginner sock knitting with Andi Moon Smith of KnitBrit
(top-down, four needle, worsted weight stockinette socks)
Three 2-hour sessions, $45
Supplies needed:
- fingering weight yarn
- appropriately-sized double pointed needles (set of 5)
Andi will provide a pattern for the class and will also bring samples of the sock to help visualization. She will be here an hour before class to help select needles and yarn if you don’t have your own.
Session 1 — 28 July, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Students will learn how to chose the appropriate yarn and needles for their pattern, followed by hands-on guidance through taking measurements, using four needles, understanding the pattern, casting on, and working to the heel flap. They will be expected to be ready to work the heel for the second session.
Session 2 — 4 August, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Students will work the heel flap, heel turn and gusset. Students will be expected to
finish the gusset and work the appropriate length of the foot for the next session.
Session 3 — 11 August, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Students will learn how to shape the toe, finish the sock and block. Time will be given for a “sock hospital” to correct mistakes, review, etc.
Intermediate sock knitting with Andi Moon Smith of KnitBrit
(top-down, four needle, fingering weight patterned socks)
A class for those who have completed a basic sock and are ready to move onto custom socks. Three 3-hour sessions, $60
Supplies needed:
- fingering weight yarn
- appropriately-sized double pointed needles (set of 5), or two 16″ circular needles of the appropriate size
Session 1 — 28 July, 1:00-4:00 p.m.
Choosing the appropriate yarn and needles
Taking measurements
Adding cables/lace — knowing what is good to add and what is not, as well as
covering color work in socks.
Adapting a basic pattern — how to change the pattern, how to work a sample first, etc.
Casting on. Students will be expected to have a sock completed to the heel flap for the second session.
Session 2 — 4 August, 1:00-4:00 p.m.
Customizing the heel - working different types of heel flap, different
types of heel, etc.
Session 3 — 11 August, 1:00-4:00 p.m.

Advanced socks with Amy Gumm of I Heart Knitting
(toe up/two circular needles/stretchy bind-offs)
Three 2-hour sessions, $75. Amy will be here an hour before class to help select needles and yarn if you don’t have your own already.
Supplies needed:
- sport weight yarn (for quicker knitting)
- appropriate sized circular needles (2 pairs of circular + 1 set 2 sizes bigger for bind off)
- appropriate sized crochet hook
Session 1 — 28 July, 2:00-4:00 p.m.
Students will learn how to chose the appropriate yarn and needles for their pattern, followed by hands-on guidance through taking measurements understanding the pattern, a provisional cast on, and creating a short-row toe. Two methods will be shown.
Session 2 — 4 August, 2:00-4:00 p.m.
Discuss the two-needle and Magic Loop methods. Students will work the short-row heel.
Session 3 — 11 August, 2:00-4:00 p.m.
Students will learn how to bind off with a choice of several stretchy bind-offs (i.e. sewn bind-off, crocheted bind-off)

Shannon, sometimes better known as
Heidi Massingill is an experienced dressmaker and fiber artist, her design studio specialized in special occasion wear and fine tailoring. Her resume includes The Phantom of the Opera, The Cleveland Ballet, Peter’s Store for Women in Chagrin Falls, Margaret’s Fine Tailoring for Women in Rocky River, The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus and more. She also designs and creates a line of children’s knitwear, Chikadee Handknits, and holds Knitting and Crochet Instructor certification with New York’s
Megan Engelmann is a Cleveland-based fashion designer and graduate of Kent State University’s Shannon Rodgers and Jerry Silverman School of Fashion Design and Merchandising. She has been sewing for nearly twenty years and specializes in women’s clothing design and illustration. As a working fashion and accessories designer for a large Ohio-based company, Megan keeps her skills as sharp as her scissors! She has been teaching sewing, illustration, and design for six years.
